National Day of Arts in Care Homes – 24th September 2024

The National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) is dedicated to promoting the benefits of creativity and meaningful activities in care settings, and the National Day of Arts in Care Homes provides a wonderful opportunity for services across the UK to participate.

At Swarthmore, our residents have embraced a variety of creative activities, resulting in some outstanding pieces that are proudly displayed throughout the home. Here are a few examples of the creative projects they’ve experimented with:

  • Agamograph Art – A unique art form that uses optical illusions to create images that change depending on the viewing angle. Two or more images are superimposed and arranged so that each is visible only from specific angles, creating a dynamic visual experience.
  • Line Drawing – This technique focuses on drawing without shadows or color blocks, relying solely on distinct straight or curved lines in a single color (usually black) to give form, dimension, and depth to the artwork.
  • Pressed Flowers – Residents selected flowers from the garden, using the old-fashioned method of pressing them in large books. These pressed flowers were then beautifully framed and displayed.
  • Creative Mojo’s Water Lilies – In this project, residents collaboratively recreated a Monet-inspired water lilies painting, showcasing their artistic skills and appreciation for classic art.
  • Felting Abstract Watercolors – A hands-on technique where soap, warm water, and manual effort are used to transform loose wool fibers into textured, abstract felt artwork.
  • Spirograph Pictures – Residents explored the Spirograph, a geometric drawing tool that produces intricate mathematical curves. Developed by British engineer Denys Fisher, this timeless tool has been inspiring creativity since 1965.
  • Abayomi Rag Dolls – These cloth dolls have a deep historical significance. Originating from African mothers who tore pieces of their clothing to create dolls for their children, the word Abayomi means “precious meeting.” Our residents crafted these dolls as a tribute to their powerful history.
  • Culinary Arts – Residents have also enjoyed baking, from biscuits and bread to Portuguese tarts. These cooking sessions bring delightful aromas to the home, making afternoon tea a special occasion with freshly baked cookies and other treats.

These social activities not only provide a sense of purpose but also allow residents to engage with one another, try new crafts, or rediscover old hobbies. The shared experience of creativity fosters fun, learning, and connection, making Swarthmore Care Home a vibrant community.
