September Already: Where Do the Months Go?
Time certainly seems to fly when we’re busy, doesn’t it? Here we are in September already, with the months passing by quicker than we can keep track of! It’s a good sign, though—keeping active and engaged makes the days more enjoyable. This past month has been no exception, with a series of delightful events and activities keeping everyone in good spirits.
A Visit to the Amersham Museum
One of our highlights this month was another lovely visit to the Amersham Museum, a place we never tire of exploring. The museum, housed largely in a beautifully preserved medieval hall house, is a treasure trove of local history and nostalgia. The exhibits take visitors on a journey through time, offering a glimpse into Amersham’s fascinating past.
We were captivated by the chance to step into different eras. The museum’s timeline display was particularly intriguing, showcasing a variety of objects from fossils to dolls’ houses, medieval tiles to historical maps, each with its own unique story.
It’s always a wonderful visit, and we can’t wait to see what the museum’s ever-changing exhibition programme will offer next time!
Rediscovering a Classic Art Form: Spirograph Fun
This week, we also took a delightful trip down memory lane with a rediscovery of an art form from the past—the spirograph! A perfect blend of creativity and concentration, using the spirograph was not only a lot of fun, but also a great way to challenge everyone’s coordination skills.
Choosing the right colours and patterns required some thoughtful decision-making, which made for a rewarding and calming activity. By the end of the session, we had created some vibrant and mesmerising designs, each one as unique as the person behind it. It was a simple reminder that even in today’s fast-paced world, some classic activities never lose their charm.
A Competitive Spirit: Tennis in Maple Cross
Another outing that brought smiles and laughter for a session of ‘Get Set for Tennis.’ It was clear from the start that Jim, one of our most competitive residents, wasn’t going to take it easy on anyone! His playful yet determined spirit kept everyone on their toes, ensuring a lively and energetic game. It was a fun way to stay active while embracing some friendly competition—and we’re already looking forward to our next match!
Baking with Mary Berry’s Influence: Portuguese Apricot Tarts
What’s better than a morning spent baking delicious treats? Our residents had a wonderful time making Mary Berry’s famous apricot Portuguese tarts. The sweet smell of the freshly baked tarts filled the air, and Jim was more than happy to lend a hand with cleaning up—especially when it came to licking the bowl clean!
The tarts were a huge hit, and everyone agreed they were the perfect addition to our Macmillan Coffee Afternoon, where both residents and staff came together to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
ostalgia. The exhibits take visitors on a journey through time, offering a glimpse into Amersham’s fascinating past.
We were captivated by the chance to step into different eras—sitting at a Tudor dinner table, relaxing in a charming 1930s living room, and even listening to stories in Ron Haddock’s lively 1960s record shop. The museum’s timeline display was particularly intriguing, showcasing a variety of objects from fossils to dolls’ houses, medieval tiles to historical maps, each with its own unique story.
For those looking for something more interactive, the museum has plenty to offer, from guided walks to activity sessions. Some of us even spent time wandering through their medicinal herb garden, taking in the calming aromas and learning about the healing properties of these plants. It’s always a wonderful visit, and we can’t wait to see what the museum’s ever-changing exhibition programme will offer next time!

Baking with Mary Berry’s Influence: Apricot Custard Tarts
What’s better than a morning spent baking delicious treats? Our residents had a wonderful time in the kitchen making Mary Berry’s famous apricot Portuguese custard tarts.
The sense of community was heartwarming, and we were especially grateful for Dot, one of our talented carers, who made an incredible cake to support this important cause. The combination of delicious treats and meaningful fundraising made it a memorable event for everyone involved.
Rediscovering a hobby
Many of our residents have stories of a time when sewing was not just a skill but a part of everyday life. Back then, making clothes—both for themselves and their children—was an act of creativity and practicality. For some, it may have been a necessity; for others, a way to express personal style or provide for their families.
Imagine their surprise and delight when a sewing machine was donated, and they realised they had the chance to reconnect with a hobby they thought had been left in the past. After years of setting aside their needles and thread, they’re now dusting off old skills and rediscovering the joy of creation. How special it is that something as simple as a sewing machine has opened a door to a flood of memories and a sense of accomplishment they hadn’t expected to experience again!
We’ve already put in our requests for handmade items …
A Day of Sun, Cookies, and Conversation
Recently, we enjoyed a walk to the Ethorpe Hotel, basking in the warm September sunshine. The golden hues of the late summer day set the perfect backdrop for a quiet moment outdoors. As we sat outside, sharing freshly baked cookies and sipping coffee, the afternoon became about more than just relaxation; it was an opportunity for reminiscing.
